DUTIES:
The Emergency Department (ED) nurse is a professional who manages the care of patients who present to the ED with a wide range of problems, from the non-urgent complaint to the life-threatening emergent crisis. Working in conjunction with other nursing staff, physicians and health care providers from all services, the ED nurse assesses the patient's immediate needs, prioritizes care and organizes and plans the patient's treatment from! admission to the ED until disposition. The nurse coordinates and facilitates care to restore optimal patient health, minimizing complications, to achieve a positive patient outcome within a dynamic and often hectic emergency room environment. In order to accomplish this, the ED nurse uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patients treated in the ED. The nurses also assists in the ongoing/continuity of care with a team of care givers within the VA system.
The ED staff nurse is a registered professional nurse who is accountable for the provision of patient care in the ED that includes treatment of non-urgent to emergent problems and is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager. The nurse demonstrates ability to work effectively as a team member to provide quality patient care and outcomes. Strong communication, critical thinking, and clinical skills are essential.
The ED supports professional growth through education activities, a! ttendance and participation on unit or hospital committees, QI projects! , membership in professional organizations, and emergency nurse certifications. The ED nurse is also required to maintain a current ACLS certification.
ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES TO INCLUDE:
Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries and diseases and uses available resources in assessment process
Completes a thorough review of systems on patients whose acuity require a more extensive assessment
Initiates plan of care based on nursing diagnosis and apply knowledge of specific illnesses, injuries, diseases, human behavior and appropriate standards of care
Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with other clinicians, health care providers, and support staff.
Respects dignity and confidentiality of patient serving as an advocate as necessary and provides a safe and secure environment for the patient.
Implements clinical and technical aspects of care and nursing orders in accordance w! ith established policies and procedures. Intervenes with proper technique, procedure and safety precautions to meet individual needs of patient. Demonstrates ability to prioritize.
Documents nursing intervention, patient response, effectiveness, complication; communicates information to peers and physicians.
Reviews and evaluates effectiveness of intervention and implementation of plan, analyzing each patient individually.
Aware of quality improvement activities and the impact on patient care.
Assumes responsibility for the assessment and care of patients appropriate to the age, gender, and ethnicity of the patient.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Full unrestricted Licensure, Certificatio! n, or Registration required
Graduate of a school of profession! al nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency
and
accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of course work equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestr! icted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Di! ploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approxim! ately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
Preferred Experience:
ACLS certification
5 yrs. RN experience of which 2 yrs. have recently been in the ICU or ED setting
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA ! Nursing Personnel.

Physical Requirements:
The position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and turning.
It requires restraining confused patients, repositioning patients, assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers/cars, and transporting them to other departments or facilities.
It requires knowledge of the special consideration needed when assisting or extrication patients from cars and the higher risk of injury to self and/or patient.
Mechanical devices available and are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift patients.
The work may! involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs.
The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care.
The position requires the nurse to work for periods of time with arms above shoulder level with neck in a fully flexed or extended position and the ability to physically control or protect his/herself from physically abusive patients.
