The primary duty of the Blood Component Specialist Trainee is to learn the duties, procedures, and regulatory requirements required of a Blood Component Specialist at ARUP Lab! oratories. Learns to work in a highly regulated manufacturing environment to produce and/or modify blood products and components intended for transfusion. Maintains traceability and trackability for all steps in the manufacturing process. Duties include data handling and input; preparation of specimens for processing in the laboratory; manufacturing and modification of blood products; blood product inventory control; blood component selection; dispense and return of blood products; answering the telephone; performance and documentation of quality control and equipment maintenance; minor problem solving.

Reporting Function

This position reports to the Technical Supervisor. This position may also receive direction and work assignments from designated individuals other than the Group Manager or Technical Supervisor.

Essential Functions

1. Accurately evaluates sample acceptability for pre-transfusion testing.

2. Checks of patient his! tory for previous testing or problems.

3. Orders bloo! d bank tests in the computer.

4. Dispenses cross-matched and/or reserved products to nursing services.

5. Selects and dispenses trauma blood or uncross-matched blood in emergency situations.

6. Receives and ensures proper storage of all blood products received from donor processing or outside suppliers.

7. Controls inventory of blood products, including proper disposal and tracking of expired products, release of reserved units when cross-match expires.

8. Returns or ships blood and blood products to suppliers or other hospitals as required.

9. Selects, thaws, modifies, and reserves fresh frozen plasma for patients.

10. Modifies and reserves platelets for patients.

11. Selects, modifies, and reserves blood products for neonatal transfusion.

12. Selects and leukocyte reduces red blood cells and platelets by filtration using the sterile docking system, including all correct documentation, labelin! g, and product modification in computer.

13. Irradiates red blood cells, whole blood or platelets using the blood irradiator, including all correct documentation, labeling, and product modification in the computer.

14. Thaws and pools together multiple units of cryoprecipitate, including all correct documentation, labeling, and product modification in the computer.

15. Washes red cells using the COBE instruments, including selection of proper unit, set up of instrument, correct documentation, labeling, and product modification in the computer.

16. Thaws frozen red blood cells including set up of instrumentation, deglycerolization of thawed units using the COBE instruments, correct documentation, labeling, and product modification in the computer.

17. Takes proper action when blood or product storage refrigerators, freezer, or platelet incubator alarms sound.

18. Logs and stores blood bank reagents and supplies.

! 19. Actively participates in the blood bank Quality Assurance program, ! including variance reporting, cGMP training, and all other regulatory activities.

20. Performs and documents quality control and equipment maintenance within predetermined parameters.

Other Functions

1. Answers telephone calls in a timely and courteous manner. Provides results available in the computer as requested to physicians, nurses, and laboratorians. Refers problems to an MLT, Technologist, Medical Technologist, or supervisor.

2. Maintains work area. Cleans bench tops and equipment after each spill, and daily at the end of the work shift as required. Documents as required.

3. Stocks and maintains supplies. Notes receipt date on supplies and rotates supplies to insure that the oldest stock is used first. Discards reagents with expired outdates and notifies the appropriate supervisor or designated individual.

4. Meets output measures as defined by individual group procedures. Assists others in areas of defined compet! ency when assigned workload is complete.

5. Complies with safety and biohazard regulations as outlined in the Laboratory Safety Manual.

6. Attends laboratory meetings and in-services as required.

7. Remains informed of all procedures and procedure changes.

8. Observes principles of data security and patient confidentiality. Maintains ethical standards in the performance of testing and in interactions with patients, co-workers, and other health care professionals.

9. Maintains open and effective communication with personnel in work teams, and with members of other teams throughout the organization.

10. Demonstrates adaptability by embracing changes in the laboratory with a positive attitude. Provides constructive criticism for modification of laboratory procedures, policies, and test/employee scheduling.

11. Demonstrates professional demeanor, in personal appearance and behavior, in all work-related interactions ! inside and outside of the laboratory.

Job Qualifications

Educat ion/Credentials required

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Will be required to pass the ARUP Blood Component Specialist Examinations at the end of training and another examination within 9 months of hire
Experience/Skills preferred

  • Two years of relevant full-time clinical laboratory experience in a blood bank or laboratory-related field
Physical and other requirements

  • Regular and reliable attendance

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work all required overtime
  • Fine motor coordination
  • Good visual acuity including color perception
  • Occasional light lifting
  • Ability to move around the laboratory
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Comp! liance with all regulatory and documentation requirements, including good Manufacturing Practices, 21CFR Parts 600-680, and 21CFR Parts 200-299
  • Ability to organize work, to meet deadlines, and work under stressful conditions
  • Absolute integrity in the accurate processing of samples, blood product production and modification, test performance, and reporting of results
