JOB SUMMARY Assists the veterinarian in performing sterilization procedures and other surgeries. Conducts animal health examinations and assists in the treatment of sick or injured animals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Associate's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, or other closely related field from an accredited college or university, plus one (1) year of experience in a field closely related to these duties; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Prepares animals for surgery by shaving animal hair and thoroughly disinfecting the site of the operation. Administers pre-anesthetic medication, calibrates the anesthetic machine for each animal, and administers anesthesia by inhalation/intubation or intravenous injection. Assists veterinarian during surgery as needed. Monitors animals after surgical procedures and provides appropriate nursing care to ensure animals are kept comfortable and optimize recovery. Washes and autoclaves surgical instruments and surgical packs. Sterilizes surgical and preparation surfaces, and kennels. Ensures laundry is washed on a daily basis. Documents anesthesia, drugs, and supplies used during surgery. Records dosages used, verifies drug balances daily, and orders pharmaceutical and surgical supplies/equipment. Discharges post-surgery animals to owners and provides at-home care instructions, such as administering medications, watching for adverse reactions, and other care instructions. Monitors animal population on a daily basis for any change in behavior, appetite, water/food intake, or any sign of illness; reports unusual situations to the veterinarian. Provides treatment and administers medications as directed. Verifies all animals have been vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Collects and performs routine laboratory tests on specimens such as blood, urine and feces. Performs humane euthanasia in accordance with established policies and procedures. Documents veterinary treatment and associated charges for services rendered.
